- Local driving: city efficiency favors EVs most exactly where most miles happen.
Where the picture complicates
- Public DC fast charging costs 2–3× residential rates — road-trip-heavy drivers may pay near-gas prices per mile on travel days.
- Cold climates cut EV range and efficiency 10–30% in winter, eating into the per-mile math.
- Purchase price: the EV's fuel savings must first repay the typical price premium — at ~$800/year of savings, a $6,000 premium is a 7–8 year payback. Incentives change this arithmetic entirely; compute it per trim, not per ideology.
- Insurance and depreciation on EVs have been historically less predictable — compare quotes on specific models before assuming.
The honest framework

- Subtract the trim-level price difference after incentives; divide by annual savings for a payback period.
- Treat maintenance savings as a bonus, charging-access constraints as veto power, and road-trip frequency as a tiebreaker.
