The formula
Fuel per day = miles ÷ MPG × gas price; add parking and tolls, multiply by commute days, then by 52 weeks (the calculator uses 4.33 weeks/month and 52 weeks/year). A 36-mile round trip at 28 MPG, $3.45, $8 parking, $2.50 tolls: $4.44 fuel + $10.50 extras ≈ $14.94/day ≈ $299/month ≈ $3,587/year.
Fuel is the floor, not the cost
The IRS mileage rate — the standard all-in figure for driving cost — sits well above pure fuel cost because depreciation, maintenance, tires, and insurance ride on every mile. If you want the true marginal cost of your commute, budget fuel with this calculator and add roughly 8–12¢ per mile of wear on top. That 36-mile commute adds ~$850–1,300/year of vehicle wear beyond the gas.
What the number is good for
- Negotiating remote or hybrid days: each weekly remote day on this commute saves ~$720/year. That's a concrete, unemotional number for the conversation.
- Comparing jobs: a $3,000 raise at a longer commute may be a cut in disguise.
